Microfinance Bank Employee Held for N1.97 Million Embezzlement

The Ogun State Police Command has taken into custody Esther Hamidu, a credit officer at a microfinance bank, on charges of absconding with customers’ contributions totaling N1.97 million.

According to information gathered by Findwhosabi Metro, Hamidu reportedly disappeared with the daily contributions made by the bank’s customers, spanning from March to December 2023.

The branch manager of the microfinance bank located in Abeokuta, the state capital, discovered that the contributions had not been remitted as expected. Subsequently, the matter was reported to the police when attempts to make the suspect remit the funds proved unsuccessful.

Despite law enforcement’s efforts to apprehend her, Hamidu managed to elude capture and vanished. However, a source within the state police command, who wished to remain anonymous, disclosed that the suspect has been apprehended.

Confirming the arrest, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, stated that Hamidu was detained in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, on Friday.

Odutola further revealed, “Yes, she has been arrested. She has been transferred from Ibadan, where she was arrested, to Ogun State. She has confessed to the crime and could not explain what she did with the money.”
