Nasarawa Governor Inaugurates Modern Abattoir to Combat Anthrax

In response to the outbreak of anthrax disease in the country, Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has inaugurated a modern abattoir in the Koya community of Karu Local Government Area. The aim is to promote hygiene in the process of slaughtering animals and ensure the production of safe and hygienic meat for the people.

During the inauguration ceremony, Governor Sule emphasized that the abattoir was constructed in accordance with global best practices to improve meat quality, guarantee consumer health, and enhance the professionalism of personnel in the meat sector. He urged the beneficiaries to take good care of the facility to maintain meat hygiene in the area. The governor also commended livestock stakeholders for their commitment to completing the project.

The chairman of Garba Mantu Nigeria Limited, Patrick Ojo, who developed the abattoir, expressed gratitude to Governor Sule for his consistent support. He stated that the modern abattoir has the capacity to serve the entire population of Karu Local Government Area and its surrounding areas. The facility includes features such as a livestock butchering area, livestock burning zone, vehicle parking space, quarantine area, dressing rooms, and functional boreholes.

The chairman of Karu Local Government Area, James Thomas, represented by his deputy, Lawal Yakubu, also expressed gratitude to the state government and Garba Mantu Nigeria Limited for their efforts. Local government officials pledged to monitor the use of the abattoir to ensure its proper maintenance by both sellers and buyers, with the goal of providing fresh and hygienic meat to the residents and preventing the spread of diseases from animals.
