In the lead-up to a Wednesday matchup between the Detroit Pistons and Phoenix Suns, an unusual altercation overshadowed the typical pregame routine.
Isaiah Stewart, the Pistons’ center, allegedly struck Suns reserve Drew Eubanks in the face during a confrontation in the backstage corridors of Footprint Center. Reports suggest the two players were engaged in a heated exchange, culminating in Stewart delivering a punch to Eubanks’ mouth.

Law enforcement intervened to separate the players, and following the Suns’ 116-100 victory, Stewart was arrested, cited for assault, and subsequently released. The cause of the altercation remains unclear, although the Suns released a statement denouncing the violence as unprovoked and affirming their support for Eubanks.

“The attack on Drew Eubanks was unprovoked, and acts of violence such as this are unacceptable. We unequivocally support Drew, and will continue to work with local law enforcement and the NBA. Stewart was arrested for assault and issued a citation and released. The investigation remains active,” read a statement from Phoenix police.

The Pistons acknowledged the incident, stating they are in the process of gathering information. Meanwhile, former Suns coach Monty Williams cautioned against jumping to conclusions, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive understanding of the situation before making judgments.

“I think that is irresponsible for them to do that when you really don’t know because two sides are giving their story,” said Williams, who coached four seasons in Phoenix. “I think until you find out everything, you can’t make those statements. I heard about that and I just thought that did not need to happen. I think there is a time for information to be gathered and then you can make a statement. For me, it’s let’s get all the information. The league will do its due diligence and it’ll come up with something. It’s just one of those situations that we just have to wait and see.”

The NBA is anticipated to scrutinize footage of the altercation, with potential disciplinary action forthcoming. Stewart has a history of confrontations, having been previously suspended for on-court incidents with LeBron James and Patrick Beverley.
Eubanks recounted the incident, citing verbal exchange preceding the physical altercation. The confrontation occurred amidst Stewart’s recovery from an ankle injury, with expectations of his return post-All-Star break.

Eubanks, in his inaugural season with the Suns, has contributed as a reserve, showcasing solid statistics in limited playing time.
