The Federal Government of Nigeria has inaugurated an Energy Management System (EMS) in Abuja to oversee electricity mini-grids operating throughout the country. The EMS, established as the off-grid electricity supervisory control and data acquisition system, aims to enhance the monitoring and management of mini power grids in Nigeria.
Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, emphasized the importance of the EMS in addressing the challenge of poor energy data in Nigeria’s energy sector. He stated that the system would revolutionize the management and utilization of energy data, contributing to the pursuit of reliable, accessible, and sustainable energy.
The EMS, located at the headquarters of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) in Abuja, was made possible with the support of the Korean government under its Official Development Assistance. The system aligns with the Electricity Act 2023, specifically Section 154, which mandates the REA to establish appropriate machinery for monitoring rural electrification projects nationwide.
Ahmad Salihijo, the CEO of REA, highlighted that the EMS would integrate with existing programs, providing real-time insights to navigate the dynamic energy landscape efficiently. The system is expected to strengthen collaboration with power distribution companies for the development, integration, monitoring, and management of interconnected mini-grids across the country.
