Nigeria Suspends New Private University Approvals for One Year

The federal government has announced a one-year suspension on the registration of new private universities in Nigeria. This decision, approved by the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, was shared in a statement by Folasade Boriowo, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Ministry. The suspension may be extended based on future evaluations.

The move aims to ensure private universities meet quality and sustainability standards. Despite accounting for over 50% of Nigeria’s total universities, private institutions contribute less than 10% of annual admissions. This imbalance has raised concerns about the institutions’ capacity to meet educational demands.

Minister Alausa also directed the National Universities Commission (NUC) to review all pending applications for new private universities. New regulations will be introduced to ensure only institutions with adequate financial and academic resources are licensed to operate.
