The acting Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Mrs. Caroline Adepoju, has initiated an immediate investigation into the tragic auto accident that claimed the lives of at least four NIS personnel on Sunday. The incident occurred when an 18-seater bus, carrying members of the service’s musical band from Kano to Abuja, lost control due to a tire burst along the Kano-Zaria Expressway.
Seven injured personnel are currently receiving treatment at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano. The accident happened after the crew accompanied the acting Comptroller-General to Kano State for an official event.
NIS Public Relations Officer, Dr. Dotun Aridegbe, announced that the acting Comptroller-General has declared a three-day mourning period and ordered flags to fly at half-mast in all commands nationwide. The NIS is committed to investigating the circumstances leading to the tragic accident and implementing measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The deceased include the driver, two brothers who suffered fatal head injuries, and an officer in the Public Relations Unit identified as Francis. The NIS has extended condolences to the families of the deceased and is organizing burial arrangements with care and respect.
The NIS spokesperson stated, “This is a time of deep reflection for the entire Nigeria Immigration Service family.” The mourning period and lowered flags are symbolic gestures to honor and remember the fallen colleagues.
