The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has directed all its affiliate unions to initiate a nationwide strike if its president, Joe Ajaero, is detained by the Nigeria Police Force when he responds to their summons. Ajaero is set to honor the police invitation in Abuja on Thursday, August 29, 2024, following allegations of involvement in terrorism financing.
The NLC’s General Secretary, Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja, issued a circular urging all state chapters and national officers to mobilize for a peaceful procession to their local Police headquarters on the day of Ajaero’s appearance. The circular emphasized the need to demonstrate solidarity against perceived intimidation of union leaders and Nigerian workers.
In Abuja, national officers and members are expected to gather at the NLC headquarters by 8:00 AM to accompany Ajaero to the Police. Similar peaceful processions and prayer sessions will be held across state capitals as a show of unity and support. The NLC stressed the importance of maintaining peace and order during these activities.
