“NLC Strike: Kano Electricity Distribution Office Shut Down by Workers”

In line with the two-day warning strike organized by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the National Electricity Workers Union took action on Tuesday by closing the head office of the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), situated on Post Office Road in Kano city.

The NLC’s National Executive Council had earlier resolved to initiate a two-day warning strike in response to the removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government, a decision that was made without proper consultation with key stakeholders. The strike, which began on Tuesday, August 5, 2023, and was scheduled to end on Wednesday, August 6, 2023, serves as a protest against this decision and the government’s failure to implement effective measures to mitigate the economic hardships arising from the subsidy removal.

Sani Bala, the Head of Corporate Communications at KEDCO, confirmed the shutdown, stating that it was in full compliance with the NLC’s directive.

Comrade Ado Riruwai, the Kano State NLC Vice Chairman who led the enforcement exercise, confirmed the closure of all government offices in the state and reported that banks in the state had also adhered to the NLC’s directive. Additionally, he mentioned his intention to visit Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport to ensure complete compliance with the NLC’s directive, which prohibits aircraft from landing or taking off during the strike period.
