The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a stern warning that any attempts to intimidate, provoke, or blackmail its leaders during negotiations will exacerbate the nationwide strike. This warning comes as the organized labour holds an emergency meeting with Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, amidst the indefinite strike action.
In a statement posted on their X handle on Monday night, the NLC emphasized that such actions could further prolong the strike. The post read, “Any attempt to intimidate, provoke or blackmail our leaders at the negotiation table would worsen the issue and further prolong our action indefinitely. Our leaders are acting in accordance with the directives of our organs. Viva! Organized labour. Viva! Working people of Nigeria!”
Call for Senators to Live on Minimum Wage
Amidst the ongoing strike, Bamgbose Betty, former Treasurer of the NLC and current chairman of the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria, suggested that members of the Senate should receive the minimum wage. In a Monday interview, Betty expressed her frustration with the government’s handling of the minimum wage negotiations, arguing that senators living on the minimum wage would better understand the challenges faced by Nigerian workers. She believes this experience would bridge the gap between lawmakers and the populace, fostering empathy and appreciation for the everyday struggles of the average worker.
