Obasanjo: Rethinking Democracy for Africa’s Future

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has asserted that the Western liberal democracy model is unsuitable for Africa, citing its apparent failure to deliver on good governance and progressive development in Nigeria and other African nations. Speaking at the high-level consultation on “Rethinking Western Liberal Democracy in Africa,” held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, Obasanjo called for a re-examination and moderation of Western democracy as it is practiced on the continent.

Obasanjo emphasized the need for Africa to develop its form of democracy, which he termed “Afro democracy,” taking into account the continent’s history, multicultural complexities, and unique characteristics. He criticized Western liberal democracy for not being homegrown and failing to consider African perspectives, resulting in a system where the majority of the people are excluded.

Describing Western Liberal Democracy as a “government of a few people over all the people,” Obasanjo argued that this model inadequately represents the views of the majority. He challenged the notion of ignoring, neglecting, and excluding the minority in the name of majority rule.

Obasanjo urged a critical examination of the performance of democracy in the West, questioning the relevance of a system brought by colonial powers and advocating for a shift in thinking. He called on leaders in academia and politics to explore and adopt ideas and recommendations that align with African cultures, traditions, and experiences, proposing a new system of government that better serves the continent’s purpose.

In his call for a paradigm shift, Obasanjo stressed the importance of thinking outside the box and urged participants to contribute to the development of a changed system of government that prioritizes the welfare and well-being of all people.
