PDP Accuses Otti and Fagbemi of Intimidating Abia Tribunal

In a surprising turn of events, the Abia State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed dismay over what it perceives as attempts to intimidate the Abia Election Petition Tribunal. The focal point of concern is the presence of Mr. Lateef Fagbemi, the designated Chief Law Officer of Nigeria, who is slated to become the Attorney General and Minister of Justice. Mr. Fagbemi was seen in court, seated alongside Governor Alex Otti’s legal team during a session of the Abia Election Petition Tribunal.

The Abia PDP views this act as a “graphic display of authority” designed to exert pressure on not only the petitioners but also the Abia PDP, its candidate Sir Okey Ahiwe, and the tribunal members.

In a press release, Hon. Elder Abraham Amah, the Abia PDP Vice Chairman and Acting State Publicity Secretary, stated, “Mr. Lateef Fagbemi before his nomination and eventual designation as Nigeria’s Chief Law Officer was the lead counsel to Alex Otti and the Labour Party in the petition brought against them by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and its candidate Sir Okey Ahiwe, challenging the declaration of Alex Otti of the Labour Party as the winner in the Abia 2023 Governorship election.”

The party’s concern stems from Fagbemi’s appearance in court, despite his impending role as the Attorney General and Minister of Justice. The Abia PDP emphasizes that Fagbemi’s involvement in private cases, such as representing Alex Otti, questions his understanding of the significance of his new position and his impartiality as an attorney general.

The Abia PDP also accuses Alex Otti and the Labour Party of resorting to tactics of panic and intimidation, potentially due to the overwhelming evidence against them. The party urges them to allow justice to take its natural course and refrain from obstructive measures.

The presence of Fagbemi in court has garnered criticism from legal circles as well. Some lawyers view it as an unnecessary attempt to influence the tribunal’s members, questioning his impartiality and commitment to his forthcoming role as the Attorney General and Minister of Justice.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how Fagbemi’s dual roles will impact the legal proceedings and public perception of justice in Abia State.
