PDP South-South Committee Supports Bayelsa Governor Diri for Re-election

Yenagoa, October 16, 2023 – The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) South-South Working Committee paid a visit to Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, on Monday to express their solidarity with him as he prepares for the upcoming governorship election in the state, scheduled for November 11, 2023.

Governor Diri, along with his deputy, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, is seeking a second term in office under the banner of the PDP. The PDP scored Diri’s first term in office as impressive and highly productive, as stated in a press release by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah.

Chief Dan Orbih, the PDP National Vice-Chairman (South-South), led the zonal working committee on this solidarity visit to the Government House in Yenagoa. Orbih commended Governor Diri for his remarkable performance, noting that he has been actively inaugurating projects while campaigning for re-election.

Orbih observed that some first-term governors campaign for a second term with promises of what they intend to do, but Governor Diri has been unique in that he has been busy commissioning and initiating projects in the state. The national and zonal leadership of the PDP expressed their pride in his achievements and their confidence in him as the party’s flagbearer for the upcoming election.

Orbih stated, “We, members of the PDP South-South Working Committee, came to show our solidarity with the performing governor of Bayelsa state. We have watched with great admiration your campaigns. Some governors campaign for their second tenure telling the people what they want to do, but your campaign is laced with commissioning of projects and flagging off new ones. It is very uncommon, and we want to congratulate you.”

Governor Diri responded by expressing the PDP’s certainty of victory, as he highlighted the substantial differences between his first term and that of one of his opponents, Chief Timipre Sylva, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC). He emphasized that the developmental projects and accomplishments of his administration were evident, even in the community of the APC candidate, where, in contrast, his opponent had little to campaign with, even in his own hometown.

Governor Diri noted that the PDP remained the only party with a strong structure and governance on the ground, capable of providing a viable opposition to the government at the center. He encouraged the PDP to unite and maintain its position as the country’s opposition stronghold.
