Peter Obi, former Labour Party presidential candidate, has criticized the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, for restricting the distribution of palliatives to the poor following recent stampede-related deaths. Obi expressed concerns that the directive, which requires philanthropists to seek approval before distributing aid, could discourage acts of generosity.
While acknowledging the need for better organization to prevent tragedies, Obi stated that the measure imposes unnecessary bureaucracy, hindering much-needed relief efforts. He called for a focus on promoting coordination rather than creating barriers, urging the IGP to lift the restriction.
Obi also emphasized the importance of addressing poverty, urging politicians to tackle the root causes of hardship. He encouraged the police to support collaboration in alleviating suffering, ensuring acts of kindness reach the most vulnerable safely and efficiently.
