Prof Missing: Kidnapped 5 Months Ago

The whereabouts of Dr. Ekanem Philip-Ephraim, a professor of Neurology at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, remains unknown five months after she was kidnapped in Calabar, Cross River State. Dr. Philip-Ephraim was abducted on July 13 by hoodlums disguised as patients.

A source in the state chapter of the Nigeria Medical Association confirmed that there is no information about the abducted doctor. However, the state Police Command expressed optimism about her release, noting that efforts had been intensified to rescue her.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Irene Ugbo, stated that the command, in collaboration with the Navy, has been conducting a search for the kidnapped doctor in the riverine area of the state. The challenging terrain has made the rescue operation difficult, but the authorities remain hopeful.

Ugbo mentioned that the police were working with limited marine facilities but emphasized the cooperation with the Navy to enhance the search efforts. She urged for prayers and hope, expressing confidence in the possibility of Dr. Philip-Ephraim’s release.

Efforts to rescue the professor faced challenges in the past when the family allegedly attempted to pay the ransom without involving the police. The situation became more complex as the kidnappers, aware of police involvement, took the victim to another location. Despite setbacks, the police remain committed to resolving the case.

Several medical associations and the state government have called for increased resources and efforts to secure the release of the kidnapped professor. The state government has reportedly provided funds to support the rescue mission. The medical community continues to advocate for the safe return of their colleague.
