Protests Over Bad Governance Highlight Nigeria’s Economic Crisis

The recent #EndBadGovernance protests, culminating in a one-million-person march, highlighted the severe economic hardship in Nigeria. Sparked by the removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the Naira, the protests exposed widespread discontent with the government’s policies.

Despite the protests’ visibility, violence marred the movement, raising concerns about its overall impact. With at least 14 deaths and many injuries reported, the demonstrations have left the nation questioning whether they achieved their intended goals or simply deepened the crisis.

Human rights activist Mark Adebayo noted that while the protests sent a message to the government, the response was inadequate. He emphasized the need for urgent economic reforms and expressed concerns that the government’s failure to address protesters’ demands could lead to more unrest.
