HomeHealthReasons For Irregular Periods

Reasons For Irregular Periods

If your periods don’t come at regular times, they’re considered irregular. This means the time between the start of one period and the start of the next is either less than 24 days or more than 38 days.

Irregular periods can also happen if the length of your cycle varies a lot from month to month. For example, if one month your cycle is 25 days, and the next month it’s 46 days, that’s irregular.

It’s normal for teenage girls and women going through menopause to have irregular periods. Teenagers might have irregular periods for a few years before they become more regular. During menopause, periods can become even more irregular over time.

There are different reasons why periods can be irregular:

  1. Eating Disorders: Conditions like anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or binge eating disorders can lead to irregular or missed periods.
  2. Thyroid Problems: If your thyroid is overactive (hyperthyroidism), it can cause lighter and fewer periods than usual.
  3. High Prolactin Levels: Too much prolactin in your blood can affect your menstrual cycle. Prolactin is a hormone that’s involved in breast development and milk production.
  4. Certain Medicines: Some medications for conditions like epilepsy or anxiety can affect your periods.
  5. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS): PCOS is a condition that often causes ovarian cysts, hormonal imbalances, and irregular periods. About 1 in 10 women with irregular periods have PCOS.
  6. Primary Ovarian Insufficiency (POI): POI happens when your ovaries stop working properly before age 40. It can start as early as your teenage years and can lead to irregular periods.
  7. Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID): PID, often caused by sexually transmitted infections, can also lead to irregular periods.
  8. Stress: High levels of long-term stress can disrupt your periods.
  9. Uncontrolled Diabetes: Both type 1 and type 2 diabetes can cause irregular periods, but managing your diabetes can help make them more regular.
  10. Obesity: Having extra body fat can affect your hormone levels, leading to irregular, missed, or heavy periods.

If you experience irregular periods and:

  • You used to have regular periods.
  • Your periods come more often than every 24 days or less often than every 38 days.

It’s a good idea to see a doctor. The treatment for irregular periods depends on the cause. Your doctor might suggest using hormonal birth control methods like pills, shots, or an IUD to help regulate your menstrual cycle. These can also be prescribed for reasons other than birth control, like managing other health issues.

Note: The original article mentioned two period problems, heavy bleeding, and unusual (abnormal) periods. If you want me to simplify those parts as well, please let me know.
