In a dramatic turn of events, former Central Bank Governor Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II is poised to be reinstated as the Emir of Kano. This development follows the recent passage of a new law by the Kano State House of Assembly, which abolished the four additional emirates created in 2019.
The controversial emirates were established during the administration of former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, leading to Sanusi’s ouster amid political tensions. However, sources indicate that Sanusi is expected to return to Kano on Friday, with the reinstatement likely to take effect following the governor’s assent to the new bill.
The bill, titled ‘The Kano State Emirates Councils (Repeal) Bill, 2024,’ was passed after a third reading in the State Assembly, as announced by the governor’s Senior Special Assistant on Digital Media. This legislative move not only dissolves the additional emirates but also paves the way for Sanusi’s return to his former position.
Sanusi’s initial removal came amid a rift with Ganduje, which led to the fragmentation of the Kano Emirate into five separate entities. With the new law now in place, the historic Kano Emirate is set to be unified once again under Sanusi’s leadership.
