SERAP Sues Senate Over Natasha’s Suspension

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has taken legal action against Senate President Godswill Akpabio over the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. SERAP argues that the six-month suspension is unlawful and violates her right to free speech.

Filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja, the suit seeks to overturn the suspension, reinstate her rights, and prevent similar actions in the future. SERAP maintains that silencing a senator for expressing opinions undermines democracy and deprives her constituents of representation. The group cites constitutional and international laws to support its case, emphasizing that political speech must be protected.

The lawsuit challenges Senate rules used to justify the suspension, insisting that no lawmaker should be punished for speaking out. SERAP also warns that the decision sets a dangerous precedent, affecting the ability of other senators to freely express their views.
