Shari’ah Council tells EFCC to expose religious sects sponsoring terrorism

The head of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has been tasked by the Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria (SCSN) to identify the religious groups funding terrorism in the nation.
Remember when the anti-graft agency discovered how a Nigerian religious group was using money laundering to support terrorists? The EFCC Chairman disclosed this information last week.

“A religious sect in this country has been found to be laundering money for terrorists,” Olukoyede had declared.

However, in response, the group requested appropriate judicial action against those discovered to be participating in financing actions compromising the security of the country in a statement released yesterday by its Secretary, Malam Nafi’u Ahmed, and President, Sheik AbdulRasheed Hadiyahtullah.

The group stated, “The Council demands the Commission disclose the identity of the religious body allegedly sponsoring terrorism/insurgency with N7 billion out of N13 billion traced to its account. This is in reference to the recent disclosure made by the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) about religious groups sponsoring insurgency in Nigeria.”

“This revelation has shocked the country and sparked worries about possible fund misuse for actions endangering the peace and security of Nigeria.” Given the seriousness of the situation, the group must make its intentions known to the public right away, and the unsettling relationship between religious organizations and insurgency must be addressed.

As a result, we fervently encourage the EFCC to release a list of all sponsors engaged in illegal activity. The public is deeply concerned by the purported release of N7 billion connected to a religious organization’s account, and they want appropriate legal action taken on sponsors and others involved in funding activities that jeopardize national security.

“We further urge the EFCC to work with pertinent authorities to ensure that swift legal action is taken and to expedite the release of the list of sponsors.”
With respect to the security state of Plateau State, the SCSN called for an all-encompassing and unbiased strategy.

“The complete absence of Muslim representation on the security committee puts at risk the committee’s ability to effectively address the underlying reasons of the ongoing disputes, as well as the diverse makeup of the state, which includes at least 40% Muslims.

“In order to make sure that the committee is truly reflective of the entire people, we immediately demand that its makeup be reevaluated. The existing disparity not only betrays the values of justice but also impedes the formation of a unified front against the obstacles confronting the government.
