Sokoto Hospital Launches Mental Health Awareness Roadshow

In a bid to raise awareness about mental health and related issues, the Federal Neuro Psychiatric Hospital Kware in Sokoto State, Nigeria, has launched a roadshow to engage and educate the public.

Professor Shehu Sale, the Medical Director of the hospital, addressed the media during the roadshow, emphasizing that these activities were in observance of the 2023 World Mental Health Day. The global theme for this year is ‘Mental Health is a Universal Human Right.’

Prof. Sale explained that the roadshow is part of a progressive approach to enhance awareness about mental health, substance abuse, and related concerns. The goal is to destigmatize mental health issues and promote easier access to mental health services.

He emphasized that World Mental Health Day is not only a day of celebration but also a day to look at individuals in society with empathy. Sale stressed that individuals suffering from mental health conditions should not face stigmatization or criminalization, as mental health is an integral aspect of overall health, encompassing physical, social, and mental well-being.

Furthermore, he highlighted the importance of the Mental Health Act, policies, and guidelines that are being developed to improve mental health care in the country.

Prof. Sale also emphasized the significance of enhancing access, affordability, and the quality of mental health care, which aligns with the country’s strategic healthcare goals.

The Federal Neuro Psychiatric Hospital Kware plays a crucial role in promoting mental health in the region. It houses a regional Women and Children Drug Dependent Treatment Center, established by the Federal Government, which is the first of its kind in the northern states. This center focuses on the treatment of women and children who are drug-dependent, addressing the stigma they often face when seeking such services.

Additionally, the hospital provides integrated health services, offering treatment for various illnesses along with standard laboratory services and tests, thus reducing the stigma associated with mental health facilities. The roadshow seeks to further promote these essential services and advocate for mental health as a universal human right.
