Human rights activist and politician Omoyele Sowore has defended #EndBadGovernance protesters, asserting that flying Russian flags is not treason. The Department of State Services (DSS) recently arrested individuals in Northern states for brandishing Russian flags during protests, which called for military intervention in Nigeria’s administration.
The Nigerian military labeled the protesters’ actions as treasonous and announced investigations and potential prosecutions. However, Sowore, via his X handle, argued that the protesters’ actions are no different from Christians flying Israeli flags in churches or others showing solidarity with Palestinian flags.
Sowore accused the government of using diversionary tactics to distract from the reasons behind the protests. He pointed out the inconsistency of condemning flag-waving now while previously using force against peaceful protesters during the #EndSARS movement in 2020.
