In a decisive ruling, the Supreme Court has affirmed the election victory of Governor Dapo Abiodun in Ogun State. The appellants, Ladi Adebutu and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), had sought the Supreme court’s intervention to compel the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct fresh elections in 99 polling units where they alleged cancellations had occurred.

The Appeal Court, Lagos Division, had previously delivered a split decision on November 24, 2023, upholding Abiodun’s re-election. The majority judgment, delivered by Justice Joseph Ikyegh, dismissed the appeal filed by the PDP and its gubernatorial candidate.
In the recent Supreme Court ruling, Justice Tijani Abubakar, reading the lead judgment, affirmed the dismissal of the appeal, thereby solidifying Dapo Abiodun’s legitimacy as the elected governor of Ogun State. The decision brings an end to the legal challenges surrounding the election outcome, providing a final verdict on the matter.
