Taraba Plans to Buy Buses for Easier Movement After Subsidy Removal

The Taraba State Government is taking steps to mitigate the impact of fuel subsidy removal by procuring mass transit buses to facilitate both intra and inter-state movements. According to Yakubu Samaila, the state Commissioner for Transportation Development, the government plans to acquire 33 and 52-seater buses to provide affordable transportation options for the people.

Key points regarding this initiative include:

Affordable Transportation: The state government aims to offer subsidized transportation services to ease the burden of higher fuel prices on the populace. The mass transit buses will be available at a reduced rate, making it more affordable for residents, especially workers and students.

Internal Movement: The buses are intended to improve internal transportation within the state, connecting various parts of the state capital, Jalingo, as well as other areas across the 16 Local Government Areas of Taraba State. This initiative is particularly focused on helping students and residents access education and essential services.

Designated Routes and Bus Stops: The state’s Ministry of Transportation Development has divided Jalingo into five routes and identified strategic bus stops. These designated routes and bus stops will streamline the operation of the buses and provide convenient access for passengers, particularly students attending public schools.

Collaboration with Stakeholders: To ensure the smooth operation of the transportation system, the ministry has engaged with market associations, transport unions, and security agencies. Collaboration with these stakeholders is vital for the successful implementation of the project.

Flight Operations: The Commissioner also mentioned that the state government has obtained provisional approval for six months to allow aircraft to land and take off from Danbaba Suntai Airport. Airlines like Rano Air and Overland are expected to resume flight operations at the airport by the end of September.

This initiative by the Taraba State Government aims to address transportation challenges and provide affordable options for the residents, particularly in the face of rising fuel prices resulting from the removal of fuel subsidies.
