Tinubu Stands Firm on Tax Reforms

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared that his administration’s proposed tax reforms will remain in place despite ongoing controversies and opposition. Speaking during a presidential media chat on Monday, Tinubu emphasized the reforms’ importance in broadening Nigeria’s tax base and ensuring economic sustainability. “The tax reform is here to stay,” he stated.

The reforms, currently under review by the National Assembly, have sparked debates, especially among Northern leaders, prompting lawmakers to initiate consultations. Tinubu acknowledged the pushback but maintained that the reforms are “pro-poor” and designed to ensure more Nigerians contribute to national development.

While standing firm, Tinubu expressed willingness to engage in dialogue with critics. “Tax matters are subjects of debates and negotiations. I don’t mind cutting edges. I will,” he said, signaling his openness to refining the reforms to address stakeholders’ concerns.
