TUC Deputy President Talks Labor and Governance

In an exclusive interview with Chukwudi Akasike, Deputy President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Tommy Etim, shared insights on various pressing issues, including the recently suspended nationwide labour strike, the cost of governance, and the aftermath of the attack on the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero.

The nationwide strike, sparked by the assault on Ajaero, received justification from Etim, who emphasized the symbolic role of Ajaero as a representative of internationally recognized organized labour. Etim criticized the attack, pointing out the contradiction of Nigeria chairing the governing body of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) against human rights abuses while such an incident occurred.

Responding to criticism that the strike should have been confined to Imo State, where the attack happened, Etim stressed the international structure of organized labour, asserting that sentiments should not overshadow the focus on the labour movement as a whole.

Regarding the perpetrators’ arrest, Etim insisted on prosecution for attempted murder, highlighting the severity of the offense. He credited the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, for his intervention, which led to the rescue of Ajaero and subsequent actions against the attackers.

Etim clarified the TUC and NLC’s decision to call off the strike after Ribadu’s intervention, commending the NSA’s integrity and expressing disappointment in the initial lack of condemnation from the National Assembly.

Addressing concerns about the economic impact of the strike, Etim dismissed the notion that it would hinder the government’s revenue, pointing out the government’s borrowing practices and emphasizing the need for responsible financial management.

Looking ahead, Etim highlighted the importance of addressing outstanding issues between labour and the government through continuous dialogue. He warned that failure to do so might result in the resumption of the suspended strike.

Discussing minimum wage, Etim emphasized the need for annual negotiations, considering the rising cost of living. He called for a focus on structures that support workers, such as education, transportation, accommodation, and health.

Etim expressed concerns about frivolous spending by politicians, especially on luxury items, and suggested a single term for legislators as a way to curb wasteful spending.

The interview covered various other topics, including palliatives, state governors’ responsibilities, political affiliations of labour leaders, and the role of the masses in influencing political behavior.

In conclusion, Etim advocated for a holistic approach to governance, emphasizing the importance of supporting manufacturing, production, and export to stimulate the economy and improve the lives of Nigerians.
