The President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Festus Osifo, has criticized the Nigerian Police Force for summoning the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, for questioning. Ajaero was invited by the police on allegations of terrorism financing, treasonable felony, cybercrime, and related offences.
In an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Osifo called on the authorities to clarify the specific offences Ajaero is accused of, arguing that the government’s actions appear to be an attempt to intimidate the labour movement. He emphasized that Ajaero’s focus is on the welfare of NLC members and urged the government to be transparent about the charges.
Osifo warned that the labour movement would continue to advocate for the rights of its members and hinted at possible actions to push the government to improve the country’s oil and gas industry, including the potential shutdown of operations to ensure refineries are functional.
