Umahi Accuses Peter Obi of Inciting Southeast Against Government

During an event organized by the Federal Ministry of Works to compensate property owners affected by the Lagos-Calabar coastal road project, Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, accused former presidential candidate Peter Obi of inciting the people of the southeast against the government.

Umahi alleged that Obi’s comments were causing unrest among the less informed populace and emphasized the need for wisdom in dealing with such matters.

The coastal highway project, spanning 700 kilometers, has sparked controversy, particularly following the demolition of Landmark Beach Resort to create a right of way. The demolition, valued at $200 million, has drawn criticism from affected parties and the public.

In response, Obi criticized the government’s handling of the project, citing job losses and the destruction of livelihoods. He described the demolition as insensitive and called for urgent attention to national security, poverty eradication, healthcare, and education.

Umahi defended the government’s actions, asserting that no inhumanity was meted out to Landmark and urging for the matter to be resolved. He criticized Obi for condemning without knowledge and cautioned against inciting unrest.

Umahi’s remarks underscore the tensions surrounding the Lagos-Calabar coastal road project and the differing perspectives on its implications for affected communities.
