“UN Reports Over 20 Million Affected by Hunger Crisis in Sudan”

Sudan is facing a dire hunger crisis with 20.3 million people in need of food assistance due to the ongoing conflict, according to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP). Of Sudan’s 46 million population, 6.3 million individuals are grappling with life-threatening food shortages. The situation has worsened since April when fighting escalated, hindering the delivery of crucial aid to those affected.

Eddie Rowe, the World Food Programme representative in Sudan, highlighted the catastrophic conditions in West and Central Darfur, where villages have been severely impacted by the conflict. Many men in these areas are dead, injured, or missing, leaving families to struggle for survival.

The conflict in Sudan erupted in mid-April amid a power struggle between de facto president Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and vice president Mohammed Hamdan Daglo. The fighting, centered in Khartoum, neighboring cities, and the Darfur region, has led to clashes near residential areas, exacerbating the crisis.

The WFP has called on the conflict parties to facilitate aid delivery to the affected population. The international community is closely watching the situation in Sudan, as millions of lives hang in the balance amidst the violence and instability.
