The Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka has taken action against lecturers who have been indicted for sexual harassment. Dr. Emmanuel Ojukwu, the Special Adviser on Public Relations and Special Duties to the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Charles Esimone, issued a press statement confirming the removal of these lecturers from their official positions at the university. The statement did not mention the names of the individuals involved but highlighted an ongoing investigation into alleged sexual harassment by certain lecturers.
According to the statement, the Vice Chancellor promptly removed the lecturers from their positions and issued strong warning letters to those affected in the respective departments. Despite the investigation, no protests occurred at the university. The statement also indicated that the students who reported the sexual harassment incidents did not provide testimony before the investigation panel.
The Vice Chancellor subsequently held a meeting with the affected departments, expressing the university’s disapproval and cautioning lecturers and staff against actions that could tarnish the institution’s reputation. The Vice Chancellor provided a dedicated telephone number for students to report harassment by staff, particularly cases of sexual harassment.
The university assured students that it is committed to safeguarding their well-being and will treat allegations of sexual harassment confidentially and with the utmost seriousness.
