Victony: The Journey from Hip-Hop to Afrobeats and Finding Healing through Music

Nigerian singer-songwriter, Anthony Ebuka Victor, widely known as Victony, has opened up about his transition from hip-hop to afrobeats. The 22-year-old artist explained that he decided to explore afrobeats during the pandemic quarantine as he wanted to venture into something new.

Covering Teen Vogue’s Africa’s New Wave alongside BNXN and Ayra Starr, Victony reflected on how the lockdown atmosphere inspired him to try a different music genre. However, he found that afrobeats presented its own set of challenges, particularly the need for relatability and creativity in the writing.

Music played a significant role in Victony’s life, especially during his recovery from a serious car accident. Following the accident, which tragically claimed the life of one of his friends, he spent about a year in a wheelchair. Nevertheless, he found solace and healing through his music. Notably, his collaboration with Mayorkun, ‘Holy Father,’ garnered a positive response even while he was in a wheelchair, motivating him to complete his project and build on its success.

Despite his progress, Victony shared that he still struggles with guilt over not remembering how the accident happened. He wonders if things might have turned out differently if he had been awake during the incident. Nevertheless, he remains resilient and determined to explore new horizons in his music career.
