Idris Amedu, a 25-year-old herdsman, was detained by Edo State Police Command agents for allegedly taking part in a string of abductions in the Niger Delta.
In a conversation with our correspondent on Wednesday, Chidi Nwabuzor, the state police’s public relations officer, confirmed the arrest.
According to Nwabuzor, the suspect, also known as Dogo, was supposedly the leader of a well-known abduction organization that was recently accused of killing some police officers.
He claimed that on September 20, 2023, at around 10 p.m., Dogo, who had previously been listed as wanted by the police, was apprehended in the Ahor neighborhood outside of Benin City after he came out of a bush carrying a bag purportedly containing belongings belonged to one of his victims.
He continued, “His arrest came as a result of a credible intelligence report that detectives at the Egba Police Station in the state’s Uhunmwonde Local Government Area had received.Eight ATM cards from domestic and international banks, a foreign driver’s license, a British resident permit, foreign cards bearing Mr. Afam Ogbu (with photograph), and Mrs. Ogbu Mary Theresa, as well as the passport photos of a white woman and three young black guys, were among the items found on the suspect.A staff ID card bearing Oguejiofor John Uchenna’s photo and name, an ATM card registered to Favour Obayuwana, foreigners’ passports, and a set of wedding rings and necklaces for women were also found.
Ahmedu, who denied being involved in kidnappings, stated that when the police apprehended him, he was on his way to a neighboring police station to turn over the bag to the officers there.
The inquiry has started, according to Nwabuzor, and the culprit will shortly face charges in court.
