The National Assembly Election Petition Tribunals in several states across Nigeria are preparing to deliver judgments on over 400 election petitions. While a total of 552 election petitions were initially filed by aggrieved candidates who participated in the National Assembly elections, more than 150 cases have already been decided, with some petitioners withdrawing their cases.
Approximately 400 cases are expected to be decided this week as the tribunals conclude their proceedings. Among those whose fates will be determined this week are seven House of Representatives members from Delta State.
In recent weeks, some election petition tribunals have overturned the victories of several senators and members of the House of Representatives, leading to rerun elections and changes in representation. These judgments have been based on various grounds, including evidence of over-voting, discrepancies in voter card distribution, and issues related to party sponsorship and qualifications.
The outcomes of these election petitions can significantly impact the political landscape in affected constituencies and states, potentially leading to changes in representation and electoral dynamics.
