Peter Obi Vows Tough Action Against Terrorists

Former Anambra State governor Peter Obi has said he would take a tough stance against terrorism, declaring that he would not negotiate with terrorists if given the opportunity to lead the country.

He made this known during an interview on Arise TV, where he spoke about Nigeria’s growing security challenges.

His comments come after the killing of Brigadier-General Oseni Braimah and several soldiers in an attack linked to Boko Haram/ISWAP in Benisheikh, Borno State.

Reacting to the incident, Obi described the attack as unacceptable and said it requires a strong and immediate response.

“No nation will lose about 10 of its senior officers without a response. I will declare war on the terrorists. There is nothing like negotiation,” he said.

Obi also pointed to his time as governor of Anambra State, saying the security strategy he used then can be applied across the country.

He recalled seeking support from former President Olusegun Obasanjo to implement firm security measures during his administration.

According to him, the approach produced positive results, with improved safety across the state during his tenure.

He said a former Inspector-General of Police confirmed that there were no major cases of robbery or kidnapping in Anambra State for several years.

Despite his support for strong action, Obi noted that force alone cannot solve Nigeria’s security problems.

He said the current situation is a result of years of poor governance, lack of proper leadership, and neglect of key sectors.

“What you are seeing today is the cumulative effect of leadership failure over the years,” he said.

Obi explained that solving insecurity requires both immediate action and long-term reforms, including better governance and accountability.

He also expressed readiness to work with political leaders across the country, including Nasir el-Rufai and Rabiu Kwankwaso, to address the issue.

Obi added that he would take an active role in handling security matters and ensure visible leadership.

“I am not going to lead from the back. People will see, they will feel it,” he said.
