Lamine Yamal has revealed he is drawing inspiration from LeBron James and Neymar as FC Barcelona prepare for a Champions League comeback against Atletico Madrid.
Barcelona trail 2-0 from the first leg and will play the return match at the Metropolitano Stadium on Tuesday, hoping to reach the semi-finals.
The young winger changed his Instagram profile picture to LeBron James holding the NBA Finals trophy after leading the Cleveland Cavaliers to a historic comeback from 3-1 down in 2016.
“He’s one of the reference points that can inspire me for tomorrow’s game,” Yamal said. “I will think about what he did and I hope it goes the same way for me.”
Yamal also spoke about Barcelona’s famous 2017 comeback against Paris Saint-Germain, where the team overturned a 4-0 first-leg defeat with a 6-1 victory.
“I’ve watched that game many times,” he said. “Neymar is a player who has marked all of my childhood, he is my idol, and I will be grateful to him forever for what he has given to football.”
Barcelona were knocked out in last season’s semi-finals by Inter Milan, but Yamal is now a key player in the squad after finishing second in the Ballon d’Or rankings.
Coach Hansi Flick praised the winger and encouraged him to focus on his strengths, especially in one-on-one situations.
Yamal said he is confident ahead of the match and hopes to make an impact.
“I feel very good and am really looking forward to the game. I hope I can make a difference,” he said, adding jokingly that he hopes coach Diego Simeone gives him space to play.
