The trial of the former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, in the alleged procurement fraud case has been adjourned by the Federal Capital Territory High Court. The continuation of the trial is now scheduled for January 18, 2024.
Emefiele is accused of using his position to confer a corrupt advantage on Sa’adatu Yaro, a CBN staff member, by allegedly awarding a contract for the procurement of 43 vehicles worth N1.2 billion between 2018 and 2020.
Following the charges, he was remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre until November 22, when Justice Hamza Muazu granted him bail in the sum of N300 million. The judge specified that Emefiele must produce two sureties in a like sum, with certificates of occupancy and titles of properties within the Maitama district in Abuja.
As of now, Emefiele has not met the bail conditions, and he was brought to court and taken away by armed personnel of the Nigerian Correctional Service. Further details on the case are expected to unfold in subsequent court hearings.
