Abia NLC to Join Nationwide Strike Over Minimum Wage Dispute

The Abia State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced its participation in the indefinite nationwide strike set to commence on Monday, June 3, 2024. The strike is in protest against the government’s refusal to raise the proposed minimum wage from N60,000 and its failure to reverse the recent electricity tariff hike to N65/kWh.

NLC President Joe Ajaero, alongside Trade Union Congress (TUC) counterpart Festus Osifo, expressed their disappointment over the Federal Government’s inability to finalize and enact a new National Minimum Wage Act. They emphasized the urgent need for legislative action to address workers’ demands.

Abia NLC chairman Ogbonnaya Okoro confirmed the state’s involvement in the strike. He stated that mobilization efforts would begin over the weekend, with formal communication and actions set to start on Monday. Okoro highlighted the need to follow due process, ensuring legal compliance and organizing a state emergency meeting to coordinate the strike effectively.
