In a bold move, the Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has demanded immediate impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara. Tony Okocha, the chairman of the Rivers APC caretaker committee, issued the directive in Port Harcourt on Tuesday.
The call stems from accusations against the Governor for allegedly breaching the terms of a peace deal brokered by President Bola Tinubu. This deal aimed to resolve the political turmoil gripping the oil-rich state, pitting Governor Fubara against his predecessor and current Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike.
Governor Fubara’s recent declaration, dismissing the existence of lawmakers loyal to Wike in the Rivers State House of Assembly, has further fueled tensions. Speaking to a delegation from Bayelsa State seeking to end the crisis and improve relations between the states, Fubara reiterated his acceptance of Tinubu’s peace accord, granting the lawmakers a reprieve.
He emphasized that the peace agreement with Wike was political and could potentially strip his loyalists of their lawmaker status. Despite making sacrifices for peace in the state, Fubara’s actions have drawn the ire of the APC leadership, prompting the call for impeachment proceedings.
