After a National Executive Council meeting held at the University of Maiduguri, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has urged the Federal Government, specifically through the office of the Accountant General of the Federation, to release the outstanding promotion arrears owed to its members. ASUU emphasized that this action is crucial for maintaining industrial peace and harmony within Nigerian universities.
ASUU expressed concerns about the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) and its role in promoting employment racketeering. The union released a statement highlighting these issues following the NEC meeting:
ASUU members are owed promotion arrears due to disruptions stemming from their forced enrollment on the IPPIS platform. The Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation has yet to address this problem despite ASUU’s and university administrations’ attempts.
ASUU called for the immediate release of the accumulated promotion arrears to ensure peace and harmony within the academic community.
Reports of employment racketeering linked to the discredited IPPIS were distressing to ASUU. The union noted that this trend contradicts the provisions of the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2003 and Guidelines for Appointments and Promotions in universities.
ASUU rejected all illegal appointments facilitated by the IPPIS and its agents in Nigerian public universities.
This statement underscores ASUU’s concerns about the delayed promotion arrears and the negative impact of the IPPIS on the university employment landscape. The union’s stance aims to safeguard the integrity and autonomy of Nigerian universities.
