Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Idowu Owohunwa, has expressed concern over the increasing expertise in firearms fabrication by criminal groups within the state. He made this statement during the unveiling of the state command’s Complaint Response Unit by the acting Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
Owohunwa revealed that criminal elements are producing firearms, including replicas of foreign-made pistols, AK47s, and other assault rifles. He highlighted the potential danger posed by this trend, especially when combined with the rise in cultism activities, which collectively threatens the state’s security.
In addition to firearms fabrication, the police are grappling with challenges related to land disputes, traffic robberies, and illicit drug abuse. Owohunwa stressed the need for collaboration between law enforcement agencies and the citizens to counter these threats. He announced an upcoming conference aimed at addressing cultism and violent crimes in the state.
Acting IG Egbetokun urged police officers to uphold professionalism and avoid unprofessional conduct. He acknowledged the negative image created by complaints of extortion involving police officers. Egbetokun also mentioned plans to establish a special intervention squad to tackle criminal elements in troubled areas across the country. The squad’s personnel mobilization has commenced, and its operations are expected to yield results soon.
Egbetokun assured that efforts are being made to improve the welfare of police officers, backed by the support of the government. He emphasized the commitment to reduce crime and enhance security, citing ongoing measures to ensure safety, particularly on troubled routes like the Abuja-Kaduna road.
