Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has called for a political solution to the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). This appeal follows the killing of soldiers in Aba, Abia State, during IPOB’s sit-at-home directive on Thursday.
Condemning the violence, Atiku emphasized that addressing Kanu’s situation politically could help reduce tension in the region. He expressed condolences to the families of those killed and highlighted the disruption caused to students taking WAEC exams due to the sit-at-home order.
“The violence that led to the killing of soldiers and civilians in Abia State on Thursday stands condemned. My thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of those who may have lost a loved one. May their souls rest in peace. The veil of the so-called Unknown Gun Men hiding undercover to unleash death and mayhem must be lifted,” Atiku stated on his X handle.
Atiku suggested exploring a political resolution for Kanu’s case to diffuse the tense situation in the Southeast, calling it a potential win-win for all parties involved.
Meanwhile, the Military High Command has vowed to apply overwhelming military pressure on IPOB in response to the killing of the five soldiers. Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, stated that the military’s response would be fierce to ensure the group’s total defeat. The attack occurred at the Obikabia Junction Checkpoint in Obingwa Local Government Area near Aba.
