A Federal High Court in Lagos has sentenced 41-year-old Canadian, Adrienne Munju, to 11 years in prison for smuggling 74 parcels of Canadian Loud, a potent form of synthetic cannabis, into Nigeria. Munju was arrested on October 3, 2024, at Murtala Muhammed International Airport during the clearance of passengers arriving on a KLM flight. She confessed to being recruited online to deliver the drugs in exchange for $10,000 to support her master’s degree program.

Justice Dehinde Dipeolu presided over the case, where Munju pleaded guilty to the two-count charge brought by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). The prosecuting counsel, Barrister Abu Ibrahim, presented evidence, including her Canadian passport, the suitcases used to hide the drugs, and lab analysis reports. The court ruled that her actions violated sections of the NDLEA Act, and all exhibits were admitted during the trial.
Munju was sentenced to six years on the first count and five years on the second, to run consecutively. However, the judge offered her the option to pay fines of ₦50 million for each count, totaling ₦100 million. The NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, confirmed the conviction and emphasized that this case demonstrates the agency’s commitment to curbing drug trafficking.
