Catholic Bishops Warn of Unrest Over Economic Hardship

The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has warned that Nigerians, particularly the youth, will continue to protest against economic hardship until President Bola Tinubu addresses their concerns. The Bishops expressed alarm over the country’s growing challenges, noting that Nigeria is like a “keg of gunpowder” that could explode if the government fails to address the widespread suffering.

Speaking at the 2024 second Plenary Assembly in Auchi, Edo State, CBCN President Most Rev. Lucius Ugorji condemned the use of security forces against peaceful protesters during the recent #EndBadGovernanceinNigeria protests. He criticized the government’s response, emphasizing that instead of addressing the issues, officials are stripping citizens of their democratic rights.

The Bishops stressed that as long as poverty, hardship, and corruption persist, protests will continue. They urged the Tinubu administration to take urgent action to prevent further unrest, warning that ignoring the cries of the people could have dire consequences for the nation.
