Former President Goodluck Jonathan has urged the federal government to promote greater youth involvement in governance. His call came as part of a statement released on International Democracy Day, marked on September 15, with this year’s theme being ‘Empowering the next generation.’
Jonathan, who chairs the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, emphasized that democracy thrives when there is a strong sense of ownership and inclusiveness among citizens. He highlighted that democracy promotes values like freedom, human rights, equity, justice, and inclusiveness, playing a vital role in achieving peace and national aspirations.
He acknowledged the global decline in democracy and its challenges in Africa, including shrinking civic space, weak institutions, election irregularities, poverty, and unconstitutional changes of government. Jonathan stressed the importance of prioritizing social security, access to justice, and reducing ethnic and divisive politics to ensure democracy’s vitality.
Ultimately, Jonathan emphasized that for democracy to succeed, citizens must experience the promises of freedom, peace, and justice firsthand.
