In a poignant expression of sorrow, former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Ghali Na’abba, Fourth Republic Speaker of the House, who peacefully passed away in the early hours of Wednesday in Abuja at the age of 65.
Characterizing Na’abba as “a rare gem and a leader like no other,” Dogara praised the late politician for his unwavering commitment to the defense of democracy during his tenure as Speaker of the House of Representatives.
In a condolence message shared with journalists on Wednesday, Dogara paid tribute to Na’abba, describing him as an icon, advocate of transparency, champion of social justice, and a key figure in establishing the independence of the legislature in the Fourth Republic.
“Na’abba was a principled man, a patriot, and a leader par excellence. The 4th Assembly, under his able leadership, served as a bulwark for the advancement and defense of freedom, liberty, and strict adherence to democratic tenets,” Dogara stated.
Highlighting Na’abba’s role as a repository of knowledge, Dogara emphasized his willingness to share wisdom during challenging times, providing clarity for the legislature to proceed.
Expressing personal grief, Dogara referred to Na’abba as a “big brother and mentor” who consistently offered wise counsel when needed. The former Speaker extended his condolences to Na’abba’s immediate family, the people of Kano State, and all Nigerians.
Ghali Na’abba, a Political Science graduate from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State, assumed the role of Speaker of the House of Representatives in 1999 following the resignation of his predecessor, Salisu Buhari, over a certificate forgery scandal. Before his demise, Na’abba had reportedly sought medical attention abroad and returned to Nigeria after a full recovery from an undisclosed ailment. May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace.
