The Lagos State Waste Management Authority announced on Monday that it is looking into the deaths of two of its employees who were crushed to death on Monday morning at the Gbagada-Oworonshoki Expressway in the state’s Charley Boy area by an unknown bus.
The agency’s director of public affairs, Folashade Kadiri, asked that the authority be permitted to grieve for their deceased. Kadiri confirmed the news to our correspondent over Whatsapp.
“Aside from what was posted on handles, there is no additional reaction,” the spokesperson stated. The cause of it is being looked into. While we, as an authority, are free to grieve for our deceased, we should let the security personnel carry out their duties.
“I thank you for your understanding.”
It was previously reported that early on Monday morning at the Charley Boy inside Gbagada, two LAWMA ladies were sweeping the express route when they were crushed by a bus driver.
Reporters found out that the two women passed away immediately.
Sodiq, a witness, told reporters, “The accident occurred this morning.” The bus was traveling at full speed in an attempt to elude LASTMA police. The two women were working when the vehicle lost control and ran them over. They instantly perished.
It was a horrifying mishap. The driver hit the two women while driving straight here; we’re not sure what was wrong with him. It is very unfortunate.
Reporters also discovered that individuals were acting agitatedly in groups, and that the area was blocked off because the throng was clogging the road with vehicles.
SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, verified the occurrence and added that the bodies had been placed in the morgue.
But according to Hundeyin, the bus driver fled with his vehicle and hasn’t been found yet.
Yes, there was an accident; he responded, but no one had been taken into custody yet. We are pursuing the driver who drove his car away from the scene of the collision.
“The deceased’s corpses have been placed in the morgue.”
Speaking with the media, Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, promised to look into the situation and determine what caused the catastrophe. But since the area had returned to peace, he urged the good people of Lagos State to maintain their composure.
It’s a very unacceptable and pitiful state of affairs. But as soon as the incident happened, we intervened and took control of the situation with our Rapid Response Squad. However, we will examine the cause in its entirety.
“We encourage Lagos State’s good people to maintain their composure.”
The claim that a car driven by its representatives killed the street sweepers has, however, been refuted by the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation.
The agency offered its sympathies in a statement released on Monday evening, which was signed by Sola Giwa, the Special Adviser on Transportation to the Governor of Lagos State. However, the statement clarified that no LASTMA officer was directly involved in the tragedy.
“The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation has been alerted to the captioned story that has been making the rounds on social media, which claims that two LAWMA street sweepers were killed in a fatal incident that happened today around Charlie Boy at Gbagada inward Oworonsoki, Lagos,” the statement stated.
“The Ministry of Transportation prayed for the repose of the departed souls and wishes to express its profound condolences to the families of the deceased and the management of LAWMA.”Information received showed that this morning, as the innocent sweepers were performing their jobs along the Gbagada Expressway, the driver of a Honda saloon car with registration number EPE 984 DV crashed into them.
“The unfortunate incident did not involve any LASTMA officers, as the immediate investigation revealed.”
But he did reveal that the car had been found by the police and that they were still conducting an investigation.
They also gave the public the assurance that anyone found guilty following an investigation would suffer the full force of the law.
Furthermore, it was verified that officers from Pedro Police Station had taken possession of the wrecked car in order to help with a more exhaustive investigation into the event to determine its true cause.
The Ministry of Transportation wishes to reassure the public that anyone found to be at fault will be held accountable to the law and that the police investigation’s findings will be made public.
