Former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, has been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Abuja over allegations of fraud involving N110 billion. Bello, who had been declared wanted in April, allegedly laundered the funds and used them to purchase 12 properties in Abuja.
Despite multiple court orders, including a directive from the Court of Appeal, Bello evaded arrest for months. Reports suggest that his successor, Governor Usman Ododo, helped him escape an EFCC raid earlier this year. In September, Bello visited the EFCC but left without facing interrogation, leading to a public summons from the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory.
Bello was finally apprehended on Tuesday and is expected to be arraigned today at the FCT High Court. The EFCC hopes to move forward with his trial, which has been delayed due to his repeated attempts to evade justice.
