EFCC Summons Betta Edu in N585M Scandal

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has extended an invitation to the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, to appear at its headquarters in Jabi, Abuja, in connection with an alleged N585 million scandal. The summons comes on the heels of President Bola Tinubu’s announcement of Edu’s suspension from office, conveyed through the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale.

Sources within the EFCC, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the development and disclosed that the Chairman of the anti-graft agency, Ola Olukoyede, had earlier recommended Edu’s suspension to the President to facilitate a thorough investigation.

The commission swiftly initiated the process after the President’s directive for a comprehensive inquiry into the alleged payment of N585.189 million meant for vulnerable groups in Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Ogun, and Lagos states. The funds were purportedly deposited into a private account.

“We have invited the suspended Minister, Betta Edu. The invitation letter was sent to her immediately after her suspension was announced by the President. We’re expecting her at the headquarters any moment from now,” the source stated.

The unfolding scandal adds to the ongoing scrutiny of public figures and government officials, emphasizing the commitment of anti-corruption agencies to ensure accountability and transparency in public office. Betta Edu’s appearance at the EFCC headquarters is anticipated to shed light on the alleged financial irregularities and contribute to a thorough investigation into the matter.
