Tinubu Directs EFCC: Investigate Betta Edu

President Bola Tinubu, in a move to uphold transparency and accountability, has directed the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, to launch a comprehensive investigation into all financial transactions involving the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation. The directive comes in the wake of the suspension of Dr. Betta Edu, who previously held the ministerial position.

The President’s decision, communicated through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, extends the investigation to encompass transactions of agencies under the ministry. The move follows public criticism and a leaked memo on December 20, 2023, revealing Edu’s directive to transfer N585 million to a private account belonging to Oniyelu Bridget, the claimed Project Accountant for Grants for Vulnerable Groups.

In a statement, President Tinubu affirmed his commitment to maintaining the highest standards of integrity and transparency in managing Nigeria’s wealth. The announcement read, “The President further directs the Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to conduct a thorough investigation into all aspects of the financial transactions involving the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, as well as one or more agencies thereunder.”

As part of the immediate actions, President Tinubu suspended Dr. Betta Edu from her position as Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, effective immediately. Edu is directed to hand over her responsibilities to the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry and fully cooperate with the investigating authorities during the inquiry.

Additionally, President Tinubu has established a panel, led by the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance, tasked with conducting a comprehensive diagnostic on the financial architecture and framework of social investment programs. The goal is to reform relevant institutions and programs, addressing institutional frailties and restoring public confidence in initiatives benefiting disadvantaged households.

These directives are effective immediately, signaling President Tinubu’s commitment to ensuring accountability and transparency in government operations. The investigation and reforms aim to eliminate irregularities and strengthen public trust in social investment programs.
