Emefiele Resigned as Central Bank Governor in August, Report Says

The former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, reportedly tendered his resignation from the position back in August. This move has paved the way for the nomination of Yemi Cardoso as the new head of the apex bank, a decision made by President Bola Tinubu.

Emefiele’s suspension from his role as the central bank’s governor occurred in June, followed by his detainment by state police and charges of procurement fraud. It appears that he opted for resignation rather than pursuing his previous position further.

Government sources have indicated that Emefiele indeed submitted his resignation to President Tinubu, but there has been no official confirmation from the central bank or government officials at this point.

In a related development, Cardoso’s nomination, alongside four other deputy governors, has been forwarded to the Senate for confirmation. According to a press statement by presidential spokesperson Ajuri Ngelale, Cardoso is expected to serve a term of five years initially, pending his confirmation by the Nigerian Senate.

This move aligns with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, emphasizing the expectation that these nominated individuals will implement vital reforms at the Central Bank of Nigeria. These reforms aim to enhance the confidence of Nigerians and international partners in the restructuring of the Nigerian economy, ultimately fostering sustainable growth and prosperity for all.
