Former Minister of Education, Obiageli Ezekwesili, has expressed her support for activist Aisha Yesufu’s rejection of the new national anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.” This follows Yesufu’s decision to remain seated during the anthem at a recent event, underscoring her dissent with the caption “#NotMyNationalAnthem.”
Ezekwesili, sharing her views on X, reiterated her opposition to the anthem, stating she would continue to sing the original “Arise, O Compatriots” as her national anthem. She criticized the lawmakers and the president for allegedly violating constitutional processes in changing the national anthem, labeling their actions as a “Kangaroo Act.”
In contrast, Joe Igbokwe, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), condemned Yesufu’s action, calling it disrespectful to the national anthem.
